About Shared / Semi Private Private Jet Travel
Semiprivate shared jet travel allows individual travelers to purchase single seats on private aircraft, splitting costs with other passengers while have most of the benefits of private aviation.
Traditionally, private jet travel meant chartering an entire aircraft at rates higher than the public could afford. It was thought of as something only corporate executives and the wealthy could afford
Here multiple unrelated passengers share the flight and split operational costs, which dramatically lowers the per-person cost. It allows access to private terminals (FBOs), which means no crowds and immediate boarding. This means no long walks through airports and dramatically reduced overall travel time.
Chartering an entire private jet typically starts around $7,500 per hour before taxes and fees. All in, a typical flight between Miami and New York, on a small executive jet costs around $20,000.
Shared seats on popular routes like New York to Miami or Los Angeles to Las Vegas run between $500 and $1,500, which can be comparable to some first-class commercial tickets
Different Types Explained
Shared / Semi Private: Semi-private jet flights are shared private jet charters in which passengers share the aircraft with a smaller group of passengers, typically 6-8. This creates a more intimate experience and a real private jet experience. Other benefits may include personalized service, with dedicated staff available to assist passengers throughout their flight with enhanced comfort and convenience.
Since it’s a smaller group flying, the cost per passenger is higher. As an example, if the charter is $12,000 and there are 8 passengers, the cost pe passenger is $1,500. Still a reasonable cost for many people, considering the experience.
Shared / Shuttle: Some of the most common names for shared private jet travel are JSX, Blade and Slate. Different than the semi private experience of 6-8 passenger, these aircraft are typically configured to up to 30 passengers.
These are typically called shuttles as they run on predetermined flight schedules, similar to a commercial airline.
Although they utilize a larger aircraft, there is an economy of scale, which brings the cost per passenger way down. Some shuttle routes have seats as low as $149.
The down side is the intimate feeling is a lost somewhat as 6 passengers is a lot different feel vs 30. However, you get roomy comfortable seats and it’s not 150-250 passengers like a commercial airliner.
Empty Leg Flights
For passengers who want the full aircraft to themselves but don’t want to pay the premium, there is yet another option.
Empty leg flights, sometimes called repositioning flights, are charter aircraft that make flights without passengers.
When someone charters an entire aircraft it may not be at the airport where the passengers are departing from. And after passengers arrive at a destination, an aircraft on most flights, has to to go to another airport which may be it’s home base or to pick up new passengers. These empty flights can be purchased for significant discounts.
